It’s Luminiscence, a brand-new live and visually stunning light, music and storytelling show that’s just been brought to midtown Manhattan.
Art and technology have come together to tell the story of St. Patrick’s history, from the 1858 plan to build a grand new cathedral in what was rural farmland to its opening in 1879, despite a slowdown of construction during the Civil War. It is said that the great influx of Irish during the famine of the 1840s and 50s was influential to cathedral officials in taking the name of Ireland’s patron saint.
The totally encompassing light flows up and down the 112 feet of the Cathedral interior, along its ribbed columns, across the Gothic ceiling, and seeping into the side transepts. The Luminisence Orchestra and Choir provides a musical accompaniment with selections from Debussy, Beethoven, Verdi, and Bach, and with a little George Gershwin on the side.

The Luminisence Orchestra and Choir
The interior of St. Patrick’s may not always be fully appreciated during visits, but when the light cascades along the walls and ceilings, the architectural grandeur is a sight to behold. Though we’ve walked past the Cathedral a thousand times, says one of the producers, guests “will see it in a new light.”
Luminisence has been presented around the world, in eight countries, and this is its debut in New York City. Actor Jonathan Roumie narrates the 45-minute presentation, the orchestra and choir are led by Maestro Malcolm J. Merriweather. It’s a joint venture between Lotchi, a company that creates immersive experiences “designed to spark inspiration and wonder,” and Banijay Entertainment, a global media and content production company.
A portion of every ticket sold supports “Renew the Living Voices: The Kilgen Organ Campaign,” helping preserve the Cathedral’s musical legacy for generations to come.
Visit Luminescence for New York for ticket information. Show runs through January 2, 2027, with a Christmas version beginning November 18, 2026.
