Those who haven’t seen “Les Miz” or want to add to the number of times they’ve seen it (once is never enough) there are two weeks left to see it performed by the magnificent Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival troupe. Like all their shows in an almost 40-year history, this one has been perfectly cast with performers who understand the power this story has on the theatregoers. Each member, and there’s no weak link in the bunch, has brought their A-game to these beloved characters.

Monumental performances abound, but a few deserve recognition. Josh Young as Jean Valjean convincingly portrays his struggle with his criminal past with compassion when Fantine and Cosette enter his life. His vocal range lifts the storytelling to new heights, as does Haley Dortch who presents a desperate Fantine and later takes on the role of Enjolras with ease. David Beach along with Nance Williamson are hilarious as Monsieur and Madame Th?nardier; as Eponine who pines for Marius, Haley Rose Ciaramella shines in her heartbreaking interpretation.

This summer is especially momentous for the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival as just this past May the ribbon was cut on its permanent new home at The Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center in Garrison, New York. This 450-seat open-air theatre replaces the summer tent that was set up for years on the grounds of the Boscobel House and Gardens, four miles down the road.
In addition to Les Misérables, the HVSF is presenting As You Like It and King Lear, although only a few productions of those two Shakespeare plays are left on the schedule. Their entire season closes on September 27, 2026.
