My Career Choice: Riana Mondavi – Charles Krug Winery

Riana Mondavi, a fourth-generation member of the Peter Mondavi Sr. family, has dedicated her career to championing her family’s legacy. With years of experience in wine sales, distribution, and hospitality, she brings a dynamic approach to her role as Director of Direct-to-Consumer Operations at Charles Krug.

The daughter of Marc and Janice Mondavi, Riana was raised in Napa Valley, where she developed an early appreciation for the wine industry. By the age of 10, she was already working summers in the family business, gaining hands-on experience in the laboratory and cellar. While she appreciated production and the winemaking process, she soon realized that her true passion lay in connecting with people. This insight led her to explore the sales and hospitality side of the industry. 

Riana’s journey in the wine industry was built on a strong academic foundation and real-world experience. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and International Business from Villanova University’s School of Business. She then launched her career in Miami, Florida, as a Restaurant Wine Sales Associate at Southern Wine & Spirits. This role provided invaluable insight into the complexities of distribution, setting the stage for her return to the family business. 

In 2011, she became the first member of the fourth generation to officially join the family business, serving as Northwest Regional Sales Manager in Seattle, Washington. Over the next several years, she expanded her expertise. Having held a leadership sales role in Northern California, she relocated to Dallas, Texas, in 2016 to become the family’s first Director of National Accounts On-Premise Sales. After this venture, she moved back to Napa and transitioned into hospitality.

Today, as Director of Direct-to-Consumer Operations, Riana is at the forefront of shaping memorable visitor experiences at Charles Krug. She takes great pride in welcoming guests to the estate, sharing her family’s story, and fostering meaningful connections over exceptional wines. Riana’s approach embodies Charles Krug’s warm and inviting atmosphere, making every guest feel at home—she can often be seen engaging with guests during tastings and tours, creating memorable experiences for visitors. By blending rich history with forward-thinking sustainability practices, she ensures that the next generation of wine lovers continues to embrace the Peter Mondavi Sr. Family legacy.  Riana also serves on the Board of Directors for C. Mondavi & Family.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Riana enjoys life in Napa Valley with her husband and their son, Carlos—the first fifth-generation member of the family. She finds joy in entertaining, traveling, and immersing herself in the vibrant wine and culinary culture that defines the region.

Can you point to one event that triggered your interest in your career?

When I graduated from college I accepted an entry level wine sales position with Southern Glazers in Miami. Unsure if the wine industry was the route I wanted to take, this was a way for me to dip my toe in the water. I quickly realized though that I not only loved the job but I loved the industry and I was hooked.

What about this career choice did you find most appealing?

My family requires experience outside of the family business before we can apply for a job within the family business. I loved that IF I did like the work and the industry I could continue on this path. However, I was unsure what I would do if I decided it wasn’t what I wanted, so I’m fortunate that wasn’t the case.

What steps did you take to begin your education or training?

Working for a distributor with such an extensive portfolio really opened my eyes up to the world of wine. I would take every opportunity I could to taste new wines and ask questions. Being born and raised in Napa Valley is a bit of a bubble so it was important for me to expose myself to wines from all over the world. Eventually I did take and pass the WSET Level III certification as well.

Along the way, were people encouraging or discouraging?

I am incredibly lucky that people I work with, people I have grown up with, and even customers, are very supportive and encouraging. There will inevitably be occasional individuals who are less than supportive. However, I firmly believe that this reflects more on them than it does on me.

Did you ever doubt your decision and attempt a career change?

No regrets. In every role I’ve held, I wanted to ensure I could learn and grow. I have never regretted any move I’ve made. Each one has contributed to expanding my knowledge and making me more well-rounded.

When did your career reach a tipping point?

My career reached a turning point when I was presented with the opportunity to train on the hospitality side of the business. Transitioning from the wholesale side, where I had built my career, into a trainee role in hospitality was a big change and in so many ways was starting over. The two worlds differ in many ways, but they share what matters most: the ability to tell my family’s story and represent our wines. Moving beyond distribution to creating personal, memorable experiences has been incredibly rewarding and meaningful in ways I had not anticipated.

Can you describe a challenge you had to overcome?

Going from a 10 plus year career on the wholesale side to go to a trainee on the hospitality side. I knew I needed to learn, and learn quickly so I could eventually step into the role I hold today, Director of DTC Operations. However, shifting how I communicate, analyze business and also learning to manage a staff was more challenging than any other position or move I had made previously.

What single skill has proven to be most useful?

Adaptability – I have relocated across cities and states for various roles, and my ability to quickly adjust, not only to new responsibilities but also to new environments, local cultures, and diverse personalities, has been key to succeeding in each transition.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of my team. With every change, I take a step back to evaluate where we can improve, and that mindset has led to thoughtful hiring and continuous growth. Over the years, it’s allowed us to build an exceptional team, and I’m incredibly proud of the work they do every day—and the way they elevate everything we accomplish together.

Any advice for others entering your profession?

Lean on and learn from others. There is never a single way to do anything, and by listening to and absorbing different perspectives, strategies, and insights, you’ll continue to strengthen and empower yourself.
