Road Tripping – Summer Vacay Heading North to Quebec City

Sometimes a loosely planned vacation turns out to be the best plan of all. This summer for our road trip, we headed north to Quebec City and discovered plenty of great stops along NY Route 87 before crossing the border to Canada.

The trip gave a positive new meaning to “I Love New York.”  Here’s some of the spots that we experienced as we traveled. Note that history buffs will like a number of these recommendations.

Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie, NY) This is the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge connecting Poughkeepsie and Highland. It is 1.28 miles in length and 212 feet above the Hudson River offering sweeping, picturesque views.

Albany

Albany Art, architecture, history and culture are yours to enjoy in New York’s capital. Start out at the Empire State Plaza Visitor Center and plan to enjoy sites that include the New York State Capitol, Corning Tower Observation Deck, Empire State Plaza Art Collection, and the Empire State Plaza Memorials. The plaza area has plenty of outdoor seating and places nearby to eat.  If you like to visit churches, there are numerous beautiful ones too in the city.

Lake George Battleground State Park (Lake George) This expansive New York State Park is in the heart of the popular Lake George vacation area. It has a Visitor Center that has fascinating historical displays of artifacts, models and illustrations depicting the area’s participation in the French & Indian War and the Revolutionary War.

The Olympic Center

The Olympic Center (Lake Placid) The historic sports complex and entertainment center is the site of the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. It includes the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena and the 1932 Jack Shea Arena, the USA Rink, Speed Skating Oval, and the Olympic Museum. This spot will delight winter sports enthusiasts and many more.

Olympic Jumping Complex

Within a short drive you can also visit the Olympic Sports Complex, Olympic Jumping Complex, Whiteface Mountain and Mt. Van Hoevenberg.  Lake Placid also has a charming downtown area to enjoy near the Olympic Center.

 John Brown Farm

John Brown Farm State Historic Site (Lake Placid) This is a free must-see historical destination. It is the home and grave of the famed abolitionist, John Brown who waged an extensive campaign for the liberation of slaves. This is a particularly important time to recognize the bravery of inspiring people in history who stood on the side of right. This beautiful site includes a Visitors Center/Barn Exhibits, house, grave site, hiking trails, gardens and picnic area.

Notre Dame Basilica Cathedral in Old Quebec

Quebec City The historic district of Old Quebec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the background of the area is captivating. Take a walking tour or board one of the hop-on, hop-off buses to get a full perspective. Museums such as the free Musee Naval de Quebec or the moderately priced Musée de la Civilisation are top cultural opportunities. Quebec City is a predominately French speaking province in Canada making it feel very international. Charming shopping and dining districts abound for every taste and style.

Montmorency Falls

Montmorency Falls (Quebec City) Just 5 miles out of Quebec City, accessible by car or public transportation, are the towering waterfalls that can be visited for a reasonable fee. Montmorency Falls are higher than Niagara Falls but not wider.  There are many options to view them with a boardwalk near the visitor center along with trails and stairs that lead to viewing platforms. There is also a cable car and a walkway above these beautiful and dramatic falls.

A road trip never disappoints when there’s so much to do as you travel by car.  Be sure to pack hiking shoes or sneakers for impromptu walks, water bottles to stay hydrated, and some snacks to enjoy along the way.
