Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer but most vacation spots don’t start rocking until the school year ends. There are still a few weeks left to enjoy some off-season travel where you can beat the crowds. A three-day, two-night excursion to Cape Cod, Massachusetts gave us a unique opportunity to relax and refresh before the height of the beach season.
With just a few days to tour, establishing an itinerary in advance was a great idea. As hiking and birding are our go-to activities, the Cape Cod National Seashore points were ideal. This national treasure includes 40 miles of sandy beach, marshes, ponds and uplands. It is a home to diverse species of animals, towering lighthouses, and cultural areas to discover the Cape’s history. Hiking and biking trails invite you to be active as you enjoy the pristine landscapes.

Nauset Lighthouse
Recognize this? If you’ve ever eaten Cape Cod Potato Chips, this lighthouse is on every bag. Located in Eastham, the Nauset Lighthouse has a rich history. There are lighthouses up and down the Cape for visitors to view and each of them has a unique story.

Coast Guard Station House, Coast Guard Beach
If beaching is your thing to do, there are so many enticing spots. The Coast Guard Beach in Eastham has a sprawling white sand beach and is the site of the stately Coast Guard Station House.

In Provincetown
History abounds on Cape Cod. One of the popular attractions, The Pilgrim Monument, lies at the end of the Cape in Provincetown. The 252-foot stone tower marks the Mayflower Pilgrim’s first landing in 1620. With admission, you can climb to the top for breathtaking views of the surrounding area. And while in Provincetown, enjoy the cafes and shops that bring visitors back again and again.

Cedar Swamp Trail
A favorite walking trail is the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail where beautiful, fragrant cedar trees tower above you on both sides of the winding boardwalk. It is located in Wellfleet with ample parking available and nearby access to Marconi Station with marvelous views of the coast.
While finding good meals is sometimes a challenge when traveling, knowing some Cape Cod specialties helps you to plan menus. Restaurants that offer Fish & Chips made with local cod are sure to please and you don’t want to leave the area without having a tender, succulent lobster roll.
Off season or in season, Cape Cod is a favorite destination on the east coast. It is approximately 70 miles from Boston and 250 miles from New York City. For more information on the Cape Cod National Seashore, visit the park website at Cape Cod National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service).
