Mourning Happy, and An Appreciation of Why Elephants Matter

It was a shock to many New Yorkers and animal advocates when it was learned that Happy, one of two elephants at the Bronx Zoo, was euthanized for age-related health issues. The incident brings the issue of whether elephants belong in zoos back in the headlines.

However, along with the announcement of Happy’s death, the Wildlife Conservation Society (the parent organization for the Bronx Zoo) will now stop acquiring elephants and will consider relocating the last remaining one in accordance with an already established policy. In this case, we’re talking about Patty, at 57 years old, who is now alone, and mourning her longtime companion. We hope zoo officials will keep the public informed as to her health in the coming days and weeks, and they do release her to a sanctuary to live out her days in peace.

I came to learn about the animal from a mother-daughter trip to South Africa. I offered my youngest, then in 11th grade, the opportunity to choose anywhere in the world, and she choose South Africa; my first thought was “yikes.” However, it was fabulous and not only created a deep bond between my daughter and me but also ignited an awe and respect for elephants.

The author at the Sheldrick Camp in Kenya where injured elephants are cared for, and orphans are raised. All are released to the wild.

The trip was planned by a local travel agent who suggested a stop at Elephant Whispers, not too far from the safari camp, Africa on Foot, in Kruger National Park. We spent the day with these giants, keeping safe distance, learning about their personalities, how they came to the camp; it reminded me of the quote that the more we learn about something, the more we come to care about it.

Wanting to know about the elephant, I purchased a book at the airport for the 15-hour plane ride home. That book took that spark of interest and made it catch fire. The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony told the story of a herd of elephants causing trouble in their South African reserve; they were “dangerous and unpredictable.” When asked if he would take them onto his land to save them from slaughter, Anthony reluctantly agreed. Their antics, good and bad, plus the bond that was created between the herd, and their rescuer was an enjoyable read.

The orphan calves are given a special formula that resembles mother’s milk.

Now, here’s the kicker. Three years after the book’s release, Anthony had a fatal heart attack. What happened next is hard to believe. Members of the herd he saved, who were miles away, began mysteriously appearing at his house not long after his passing. They remained there, standing vigil for two days; it’s a story well-documented by staff and family.

Writing about this still leaves me breathless. After a visit to Elephant Whispers rehabilitation camp, I purchased a book called The Elephant Whisperer? Hmmm…a connection, I wonder?

But that’s something for another day.

It’s worth noting that Happy made history during her time at the Bronx Zoo. In a 2005 study, she repeatedly touched a white X on her forehead from the image she saw in a mirror. His was called, “passing a self-awareness test,” something that had only been considered in humans, apes and dolphins. It showed that elephants have advanced cognitive abilities than previously thought. This “landmark achievement,” began to raise awareness regarding animal rights for all.

Good job, Happy. Rest in peace.
