Art X Fashion at The Museum at FIT

Art and fashion just go together. A new exhibition at The Museum of FIT brings together an extraordinary collection.

Visit the most fashionable museum in NYC. The Museum at FIT is presenting a fascinating major exhibition, Art X Fashion. For all those who enjoy the arts, its connection to wearable fashion is superbly presented. See it through April 19 in the museum’s expansive downstairs galleries. Admission is free.

Art X Fashion is wonderfully curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, the Curator of Costume and Accessories.  It features 140 garments, textiles, and accessories from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection.  When we visited, there were guests of all ages snapping pictures and reading the informative placards that accompany each of the displays.

The exhibition traces fashion and art’s parallel aesthetics from 18th-century Rococo to late-20th-century Postmodern era. It smartly uses the framework developed by the renowned art and fashion historian Dr. Christopher Richards.  Art X Fashion invites a question for viewers to ponder, “Is Fashion Art?”

Some of the exquisite displays with insightful information include “Reproductions,” “Designers as Artists,” Art in Conspiracy with Fashion,” Extraordinary Artisanship: Embroidery,” “Cultural Impact,” and Parallel Expressions.”

Themes also address the intersecting art-and-fashion work of artists, such as Salvador Dalí, Sonia Delaunay, Kerry James Marshall, Antonio Lopez, and Pablo Picasso.  Fashion designers on display include Hussein Chalayan, Issey Miyake, Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Vivienne Tam.

Art X Fashion is a significant cultural exhibition.  You likely will want to view it more than once. The Museum at FIT is conveniently located on Seventh Avenue at 227 West 27th Street, New York, NY  10001-5992. It is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Bring the Studio Home: Why You Need a Pilates Machine

Studio Pilates is hard to beat – the cues, the atmosphere, the feeling of walking out taller than you walked in. But even when you love it, logistics can quietly sabotage consistency: commuting across town, reshuffling meetings, racing to make a class time, then repeating it all again next week. A pilates machine can change that equation. A home reformer turns “I’ll go when I have time” into “I can do this anytime.” It’s a
