Staying motivated in the workplace is challenging, especially when it comes to keeping that motivation constant. It’s hard to believe that anyone has the ability to maintain 100% motivation all the time at work. There can be a number of factors that influence the productivity of staff and there are simply some days that are bad.

In order to keep employees motivated, an effort has to be made by those who are able to make changes and implement productive ways of working. Appreciation for staff, in general, is also required and realistic expectations are going to help with motivating employees.

The benefits of motivation in the workplace

There are many benefits that come with employees having great motivation when they come to work. With 81% of employees thinking about quitting their jobs for better offers, creating a productive and inspiring work environment is crucial. Here are some of the benefits of motivation in the workplace:

  • Fewer employees are absent from their jobs.
  • Improves worker performance and work performance in general.
  • Stronger relationships between peers.
  • Improved customer experience and quality of work.

Motivation is built on the happiness and satisfaction that employees have for their job. If that’s not fulfilled, then motivation cannot be expected to exist all of the time.

7 ways to encourage motivation in the workforce

How does a business inspire and encourage motivation within the workforce? Here are several ways to do just that if employee motivation seems to be lacking or needs improvement this year.

  1. Create a friendly and safe environment.

As a business, it’s important that the atmosphere for employees is one that’s friendly, welcoming, and safe. A friendly and warm environment is going to keep employees feeling comfortable in the space that they’re in. It gives them the encouragement they need to get on with work without having to deal with any of the issues that may come with a negative work environment.

An environment that’s not safe both physically and mentally is one that needs attention immediately. It might be that employees have commented on certain problems with the physical aspects of the building being unsafe. When it comes to other employees, some may have expressed concern over other employee behavior.

With that being said, first and foremost, creating a positive environment is key to helping improve the motivation of employees in general.

  1. Be respectful to employees in the workplace.

Respect for anyone goes both ways. Regardless of who they are in the business, everyone should be treating one another with respect. These relationships are important to have in a business and will only benefit the motivation and productivity within the company as a result.

Where there’s a lack of respect, there’s a decline in work productivity. That lack of respect can also result in broken relationships that could make some employees uncomfortable.

A good way to tackle this is by introducing some team-building activities. This can bring together employees from all departments and levels to band together and socialize in a professional capacity.

Being respectful is easy enough for anyone to do and if it’s not there, then it’s the responsibility of the business to step in and encourage it.

  1. Introduce peer recognition programs.

What is peer recognition? Peer recognition programs are introduced when employees want the opportunity to celebrate and reward one another.

This is a great way of helping motivate employees and encouraging managers or heads of departments to reward those they look after.

Peer recognition can be gifting the employee with a financial bonus or rewarding them with an accolade that they can show off to others within the business. Some may be big expressions of appreciation, whereas others can be small acts that go a long way in providing motivation to those that are lacking it.

  1. Provide them with the tools to grow.

There are lots of tools out there currently for employees who are struggling with finding motivation in their roles. Perhaps they’re feeling overwhelmed with the current workload they have or that they have felt a dip in their work performance due to no longer enjoying their job.

Whatever the reason may be, it might be solved with the implementation of tools and software. For example, for those that are struggling with maintaining a current workload, a platform that can help manage the tasks they need is useful. Something like Asana, for example, allows employees to create and share tasks with others, as well as maintaining their own timetable.

As a business, the resources that are provided to employees are important to give to help them thrive.

  1. Encourage regular breaks.

In order to keep staff motivated, it’s important to provide staff with regular breaks. Why? Well, as it’s already been mentioned, it’s hard to expect employees to work at 100% from the time they arrive at work, to the moment they clock off.

Regular breaks can allow staff to stretch their legs, and disconnect from work for 10 minutes to an hour depending on what is offered as standard. To enhance the benefits of these breaks, consider incorporating wellness initiatives like mobile massage therapy, which can be brought directly into the workplace to help employees relax, reduce stress, and return to their tasks feeling refreshed and more focused.

  1. Empathy goes a long way to motivating employees.

When it comes to motivating employees, empathy goes a long way. It’s something that many businesses should try and have when helping employees through their work life. Sometimes, personal issues can get in the way of work, which is something that happens to many.

As a business, having the empathy to provide employees with compassionate leave when needed and the flexibility to work from home occasionally, or regularly, is important.

  1. Communicate regularly.

For encouraging motivation in the workplace, it’s important to communicate with employees regularly. A lot of problems and issues can go unnoticed if there’s not an established and strong connection with employees.

With that said, look at how managers are connecting with their staff members in question and whether this could be improved upon. A lack of communication is never a good thing for any business.

Motivation is the key to success for any business achievements

To inspire employees is to motivate them. That motivation can lead to productivity, which generates success.
