The government-mandated lockdowns have forced a lot of people to stay home and away from their favorite haunts. This has left them with more free time for hobbies, even if they’re still working. After you’ve cleaned the house and caught up on your binge watching, what else can you do? Here are 15 creative hobbies you should consider.

Play Soduku

Soduku is a simple mathematical puzzle, but it challenges the mind. It can be played via apps, or you can buy cheap Soduku books. And it doesn’t require the in-depth cultural knowledge or vocabulary crosswords do.

Start Cooking

Cooking made our list for several reasons. It is a skill everyone should have, and you can include the whole family or do it by yourself. You can try to make family recipes or try new ones while the restaurants are closed. You’ll probably save money, too, since raw ingredients you prepare are cheaper than the prepared meals, especially compared to restaurant food delivered to your home.

Go Hiking

Hiking is a productive hobby since it forces you to get off the couch and get some exercise. If you have a set destination, you have a goal to keep you going. And if you’re spending time in the park or even in the wilderness, you’re doing wonders for your mental health.

Try Anagrams

Anagrams are words you make by rearranging others. They are a very intellectual exercise. It is something you can do online or in competition with friends. With this anagram solver, you can get answers to the challenge before you. This reduces your frustration and gives you some ideas for next time. The side benefit of this is that you become amazing at Scrabble.

Do It Yourself Home Repairs

This can be a great way to learn skills and save money. Note that not everything is safe to do yourself. If it involves wiring or serious plumbing issues, call in a pro.

Start Watching Documentaries

Stop watching the news because it is stressful. Stop watching dramas because they can make you depressed about your own life. Watch documentaries instead. You’ll learn something, and they’re often real-life dramas.

Start Gardening

Gardening could start with a few plants in the window or planting a massive vegetable garden. You could raise herbs to save money or flowers you love.

Start Doing Crosswords

If you want to challenge your vocabulary or your cultural knowledge, start doing crosswords. You could start with the ones in the newspaper and then buy books full of them.

Go Camping

Camping gets you out of the house and into the wilderness. If you can’t get out to a national park, try camping in the backyard, especially if you have kids. You can practice setting up tents, teach the kids fire safety, cook on a grill, and teach them astronomy.

Play Board Games

This helps you break the digital gaming habit while giving you a healthier substitute. You can play with friends and family in real life, or you can find ways to play them via video chat.

Learn Origami

You’ll find others recommending learning to draw or paint. The question is: what do you do with the artwork afterward? Origami only requires paper, and you can reuse the paper or throw it away when you’re done. Note that this is a good way to use scrap paper in a new way.

Scrapbook

A lot of us have piles of photos on the bookshelf. Start a scrapbook. A scrap book is fancier than a mere photo album, and it helps you remember the best parts of your life. You could add a few more years to the baby book or add anniversary photos to your wedding album.

Try Knitting

Knitting has a number of benefits. It is cheap. It is something you can do while listening to the radio or watching TV. You create something you or others could use, be it a sweater, scarf, or hat.

Join a Book Club

Reading is generally good for the mind. A book club will motivate you to actually finish the books. And it gives you people to talk to about the book when you’re done.

Become a Mentor

Mentoring allows you to pass on your knowledge to someone who is interested. Depending on your background, it could provide invaluable professional knowledge. It allows you to create a close personal or professional relationship.
