The Types of Secondhand Stores in New York City

The sustainability movement has proved to be a boon for shops that offer secondhand goods. But deciding which type of store suits your needs can be tricky. Here is a breakdown of the key differences between thrift stores, charity shops, vintage shops, resale shops, and consignment shops. 

Thrift Stores
These are typically nonprofit and benefit a particular cause or charity. They rely on donations of clothing, furniture, home goods, books, toys, and other items. If you plan to donate, check on when those items are accepted and if there are any restrictions for what might not be accepted. From the website, you can also arrange for donated items to be picked up. Prices in thrift shops are usually very low and sometimes can be negotiated. Items are not curated for value, but smart shoppers may unearth a treasure that could be worth real money. Funds collected go towards the charity’s cause.

Vintage Shops
These outlets are for serious collectors or just someone looking for something that may be old, but will never go out of style. Prices will fluctuate depending upon the age and condition of the item. These are stores that specialize in 70s bohemian dresses, 90s band tees, or designer clothing from the houses of Oscar de la Renta or Chanel.

Resale Shops
These shops are for-profit businesses that buy and resell secondhand goods. They often focus on current or in-demand items like clothing, handbags, and homeware.
