6 Valid Reasons to Cancel a Wedding

A wedding can be cancelled for a variety of reasons. Whether you have decided to extend your engagement, are under too much pressure, or have just had a change of heart, there are a number of key steps you must follow before you inform your guests. Continue reading to find outwhether or notyou should cancel your wedding so you can prepare tobreak the news to your loved ones.

  1. You are uncertain

If you feel unsure of your commitment to your big day or your future spouse, you should probably call off your wedding. Whilst you may feel as if you are inconveniencing your guests by doing so, it may sadden them more to find out you were unhappy throughout the entire duration of the day and are unlikely to continue the marriage. If you have a niggling concern or worry, you must discuss it with your spouse in advance of your big day. This can prevent an explosive argument on your honeymoon and provide you with peace of mind going forward. If you are unable to find a solution, you can make an informed decision as to whether or not to go through with your wedding. This can stem from past unfaithfulness or a difference of opinion when it comes to the nature of your future together as a couple or as a family. Alternatively, you may just decide to postpone the date. When it comes to postponing a wedding, there are a whole host of factors you must consider. By familiarising yourself with this guide to postponing a wedding, you can find out everything you need to know.

  • You have a gut feeling

A gut feeling can be difficult to justify. You may have an instinct that something is wrong but find yourself unable to determine why. You must think of times when you felt a similar emotion in the past. Have your instincts ever been wrong, or do they usually turn out to be right? If there is an opportunity to find out ahead of time, you should pursue every avenue. Asking a friend or a family member how they feel about the situation can provide you with a much-needed second opinion and allow you to come to a conclusion. If you struggle to form a sense of excitement when you anticipate your big day, this may be a red flag. When it comes to the final weeks before your wedding, nerves are perfectly normal. Apprehension, however, is not. The decision to spend the rest of your life with someone is a decision that should not be taken lightly. You must ensure you are absolutely sure you cannot proceed with your nuptials before you call it off.

  • Infidelity

Whether you can’t let go of past infidelity or have recently discovered proof of your fiancé or fiancée cheating on you, this is a relatively common, and valid, reason to cancel a wedding. You must think twice about marrying someone that has betrayed you in the past. If you have resolved your issues through therapy, rehab or psychology, and you trust your spouse not to repeat their mistakes, there is no reason why your wedding should not go ahead. If the disloyalty occurred fairly recently or you are worried they may stray again, itmay benefit you tocancel or postpone your wedding until you are confident in their ability to remain faithful to you forevermore. A legal partnership may only encourage them to continue leading a double life if they can continue to do so with the added benefits of married life.

  • You feel rushed

Feeling rushed is another common reason to cancel a wedding. Whether you let your excitement get the better of you or you are under pressure from friends or family members to tie the knot, it can soon become overwhelming. While you may be certain you want to marry your partner at some point in the not-so-distant future, there is no such thing as being too cautious when it comes to planning a wedding. You may have even accepted the offer of marriage out of sheer fear, embarrassment, or shock. It can take time for the excitement of a proposal to wear off. You must be transparent with your partner from the onsetabout whether you are ready for marriage or could benefit from waiting a couple of years.

  • You both suffer from a difference of opinions

Whilst the popular saying of opposites attract may be true in some cases, it could not be further from the truth for others. For a marriage to be successful, you must agree on a number of key issues. This includes your stance on starting a family, political opinions, money management, the division of household labour, debt, and your dream home together. Even if you love your other half enough to overlook these issues, it will only lead to clashes in the future.

  • You don’t know them well enough

Whilst many happy marriages that began with two strangers have stood the test of time, it may benefit you both to get to know each other a little better before walking down the aisle together. You may end up discovering they have a criminal background, have a history of getting into trouble with the law, or are a serial cheater. Statistically, you can slash the chances of your marriage ending in divorce by waiting a minimum of three or more years to propose.

A marriage is one of the biggest commitments you will make in your lifetime. Before you agree to a long life of happiness together, there are a number of key factors you must consider beforehand. Similarly, you must also familiarise yourself with a series of deal-breakers that can guarantee your marriage will only end in disaster. This includes being uncertain, having a gut feeling, past or current proof of infidelity, feeling rushed, you and your partner having a difference of opinions, and not knowing them well enough.
